When sunlight hits the earth, it can be reflected back into space or absorbed by the earth. When absorbed, our planet releases energy in the form of heat into the atmosphere. Gases greenhouse effect (GHG) such as: carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) among others; absorb energy, stopping the release of heat into space causing a global warming of our planet, this is known as the greenhouse effect.
Many human activities emit a large amount of GHG into the atmosphere, causing global warming, which is later reflected in alterations to the environment and global climate change.
It is the total amount of emissions, direct and indirect, of GHG generated by an individual, organization, process, product or event, represented by CO2e. In other words, it is its contribution to the increase of GHG in the atmosphere and therefore to global warming and other climate changes.
It is a unit used to compare different greenhouse gases (GHG) based on their global warming potential (GWP) and is used as a base unit to calculate the carbon footprint of individuals, events, services, products or companies.
